It also includes a newly commissioned performance by the Gallery titled Muerte al Olvido (Death to Oblivion). This exhibtion -- on view in the Herman Maril Teaching and Research Gallery -- also draws from the riches of the UMD Art Gallery's permanent collection, educating students on how to incorporate museum objects into new forms of expression and genres. Carlos Martiel: Línea de Tiempo is curated by Patricia Ortega-Miranda, Department of Art History & Archaeology doctoral student and Curatorial Assistant, and Taras W. Matla, Associate Director of the University of Maryland Art Gallery. This exhibition and the performance of Muerte al Olvido is made possible, in part, by a generous grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. It also includes a newly commissioned performance by the Gallery titled Muerte al Olvido (Death to Oblivion). Known primarily for the use of his nude body as a primary substrate and focal point, Martiel's work casts a light on to historical tensions, social barriers, and cultural traditions that is often used to define marginalized or underrepresented peoples around the world. Additional support is provided by the Dorothy and Nicholas Orem Exhibition Fund. Funding for the forthcoming exhibition catalogue is provided, in part, by the Armand-Paul Family Collection.
